Latex International (formerly Latex Foam Products) was founded in 1975 by William Coffey and Steve Kordiak upon leaving the Sponge Products Division of Grand Sheet Metal Products. Within two years, Latex Foam Product’s facility grew to 15,000 square feet of space and produced their first latex pillow in 1977.
By 1979, Latex Foam had established relationships with national manufacturers in the bedding industry. In 1985, the company relocated to a 284,000-square-foot facility in Ansonia, Connecticut to support its growing business in mattress cores, furniture cushions, pillows, mattress toppers and cosmetic applicators as well as custom-designed products for industrial sectors like the automotive industry. In 2002, after a major fire destroyed the Ansonia facility, the company rebuilt a new, state-of-the-art facility in Shelton, Connecticut. This flexible manufacturing facility services more than 200 customers throughout North America and beyond. Today the company operates three regional fabrication sites located in Connecticut, Georgia and California. These locations provide customized mattress components and toppers to customers based on their specific needs. John Coffey continues his father’s key role at Latex International as a technology advisor focusing on innovation and the company’s commitment to the environment. John has a long history with the company and has led many functional areas. He joined LI in 1985, spending five years as Technical Director and four years as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Bedding Products. He has also served as President of the Bedding Products Division as well as Chief Information Officer (CIO).
In 1997, Latex International entered into an agreement with Europe’s Sapsa Bedding to be the exclusive distributor of continuous process (Unilatex™) latex cores in North America and established Latex International. Today, Latex International remains the only Talalay latex foam manufacturer in the Americas. The company markets its ability to create a latex mattress to a manufacturer’s exact specifications, including custom-designed patterns and densities. These custom bedding configurations include zones of comfort, support layering (“toppers”), patented edge support, as well as combining its premium quality Talatech® latex with its imported Unilatex™.
Latex International has historically offered its customers an array of latex foam pillows, in a wide variety of sizes. The company, with its state-of-the-art capabilities, can now produce specialized pillows for customers, in a variety of sizes and densities, facilitating the creation of both new and customized products.
In April 2002, Latex International announced a strategic alliance with Louisville Bedding, a leading manufacturer and distributor of pillows and mattress pads, to expand latex foam pillow product offerings in the U.S. retail market. This agreement enables both companies to jointly develop business plans and strategies to better serve each retailer in the areas of product selection, merchandising, and promotion.
As the world’s leading Talalay latex pillow producer, LI provides its international customers with pillows that meet the specific country’s sizing needs, as well as firmness specifications. All LI pillows are available in multiple variations of standard, queen and king sizes in soft, medium, and firm densities.
